The self-checkout asks me to donate to charity before it asks whether I want a receipt. I want to talk about that order.

Screen order is a priority list somebody wrote down. There was a meeting. The donation prompt moved in front of the receipt prompt. It moved because more people say yes while they are still holding the card. That is the whole mechanism. No mistake, no kindness, just a number that went up.

I do not object to being asked. I object to the pretence that the order is neutral. It is the most designed thing on the screen.
