Chapter Two : Cleaning Up
————————————————————
Throughout the night Lucy rummaged around the cabin, the small bathroom only had one shelf, and the contents on that shelf were even less. A few herbs, bandages, nameless ointments. Lucy Gray had a second thought about helping him, surely he didn't know what the herbs and ointments did. She could simply poison him, let the venom do its thing, but then again how would she get the bullet deeply lodged in her leg and arm out? Pushing aside these thoughts she treated Coryo. Using a plant known for drawing out venom, and an ointment to reduce the swelling in the bite area.
"Hold still" Her calm voice shocked Snow, just earlier dragging her through the woods she was hysterical, what changed? Surely she didn't trust him again, but they did both need one another's help. His skin pulsed as Lucy touched it.
"What is that?" He asked, his voice falling, his eye lids were heavy. Was he dying? Lucy didn't seem concerned, but of course she didn't, after the recent event Snow was sure she wanted him dead.
"Hycenous leaves" Snow watched as Lucy placed a few leaves in her mouth and began to chew, he could smell them, minty but also sweet. He wondered if the taste was good, maybe he could make soup out of them. Next she plopped the chewed up leaves on where he got bit, instantly it stopped throbbing, a quick relief going through his body. Lucy held a leave up to his mouth.
"Eat it, it'll take away your body aches." The scent of the leaf was stronger now, with it being directly under his nose. It brushed his lips, tickling the peach fuzz forming on his cupid's bow. Slowly he opened his mouth and allowed Lucy to place the leaf on his tongue. Contrary to its smell, the plant tasted horrible. Definitely not good for soup. For a second Snow was worried it could be poisonous, but Lucy had just got done chewing it, so surely it was safe. But then again she didn't swallow it.
"Is it safe to swallow?" He asked, his voice was more powerful now, the leaf was helping. Lucy chuckled softly.
"Of course it is silly" She hummed, Snow couldn't help but feel soothed. The way he always had.
Slowly the pain went away, the taste of the plant lingered in his mouth, after about twenty minutes Lucy washed off the chewed up leaves. The bite marks were barely even visible anymore.
"Now, how are you going to help me?" Lucy purred, the pain in her leg was agonizing and she knew although the Hycenous leaves could help, they would not stop an infection. Snow thought for a moment before speaking.
"I saw that you have bandages, what are those ointments you have? Do you have any tweezers? Or maybe rubbing alcohol?" The questions made Lucy's head spin. She wasn't sure what the names of the ointments were, only knew what they did. What were tweezers? And rubbing alcohol was a luxury of the past, only used once in her lifetime. Lake water was the cleanest thing around these days, Snow watched her expectantly, surely she was confused. But how? His words were simple, and he asked for simple supplies.
"Yes, I have bandages but not much. I don't know the names of the ointments but I can tell you what they do. I have no clue what tweezers are, and rubbing alcohol isn't allowed in districts. Lake water is the best I can recommend." She spoke fast, Snow was appalled. Lake water? Surely that would infect her wounds, and how was he supposed to get the bullet out without tweezers. Although he had so many questions himself he nodded. Then considered another thing.
"What about a thread and needle for stitches?" Lucy nodded. Good, atleast he could get it closed up. Pushing himself off the bed he walked to the bathroom. He identified the thread and needle, good enough to keep the wounds together. There was only three different kinds of ointment, all homemade. One a milky white color, the next orange, and the last was a deep brown. Grabbing everything he headed back to the main room. He half expected Lucy to be gone, but he knew with how bad her leg was she wasn't getting anywhere.
"Do the faucets in the bathroom work? Are they lake water as well?" Lucy nodded, answering both questions in one.
Picking her up Snow moved to the bathroom, laying her in the cold bathtub, he turned the faucet on and icy cold water poured out. It looked clean and smelled alright. It would have to do. Looking around he found tallow soup and a rag.
"Undress" He told Lucy. She hesitated. Snow stared at her. As a boy he was always taught district people had no shame in nudity, but then again Lucy was not district. She was covey. Sighing he slumped his shoulders.
"Don't be embarrassed, I'm not going to do anything to you, I just need to clean your whole body. And your clothes need to be dried anyways." This seemed to relax Lucy a bit. Quickly bit carefully Lucy peeled her wet clothing from her shivering body. The tub was filled about half way now, Snow quickly shut it off. Fully naked now Snow handed the soap and rag over
"Bathe your body, avoid the wounds, don't get soap in them, only clean the dirt and blood around." Lucy nodded, Snow left the room. Giving her some privacy.
"Let me know if you need help!" He called shutting the door. While Lucy was occupied with that he looked around the cabin. Seeing if there was any food, pots and pans, maybe something to drink. In the small kitchen he found two small pans and one large pot. No lids for either. There was a small wooden stove, with one burner. No oven compartment. It took wood as fuel, next to it there was a small pile. He then understood the stove both provided food and warmth. There was no fridge, no sink, only a small counter top and a shelf on top. There were two cans on the shelf, the bigger of the cans was bone marrow and the other was salt. Not much food.
The rest of the cabin was fairly simple, a bed that could barely fit two people, a small table for eating, and the bathroom which was occupied by Lucy at the moment. There was a large metal trunk in one corner of the room, not locked. Inside there were more cans, luckily some food. Mostly beans and vegetables. There was also some clothes, two pairs of pants, two shirts, a pair of shoes and a jacket. All women's clothing. Snow wondered what he would wear. His own clothes were soaked. His next move was peeling them off his body, leaving him in only his under garments, which he took note of that Lucy Gray didn't even have any. Laying his clothes over the small stove he went back to the bathroom. Lucy was still scrubbing, now working on her hair. Without looking at her, he took her clothes. She stopped what she was doing, going to object.
"I'm only drying them, I'll bring you some more out of the trunk in there" His words were quick as he went back to the stove. Laying Lucy's clothes over it as well, pilling it with a few pieces of wood. He found a box of matches back in the trunk and lit the stove.
Maybe this wouldn't be so bad Snow thought, if he could get Lucy to trust him again. But he knew that would be difficult, his mind continued to spin. Thinking of living here in this cabin for the rest of his life, or convincing Lucy to come back to a Capitol with him. His mind continued to wander, until he heard Lucy call him from the bathroom. Great, now it was time to deal with the wounds.
