Drew in a café today for the first time in about a year and remembered why I stopped.

Not because anyone looked. Nobody looked. That is the problem. I spent forty minutes braced for someone to look, and drawing while braced produces a very particular kind of line. Tight, careful, corrected. Everything I put down was hedged.

The pages I like are the ones I did at home at eleven at night when I did not care. You can see it. The line either commits or it does not and there is no faking the difference afterwards.

Confidence is not a feeling you have about the drawing. It is a property of the mark.

Somebody said that to me years ago and I did not understand it and now I do and it has not helped even slightly.

the braced line. you can see it in stitching too. the row where somebody was being watched is always tighter
