What's new on Vewn

A big round of fixes went out today. Most of it is under the hood, but you should notice that things feel faster and more reliable.

Faster everywhere

  • Feeds, profiles and tag pages load faster and use less data.

  • Avatars load as small thumbnails, so lists appear quicker. New uploads only.

  • The app checks for new notifications and messages less often in the background, which is easier on your battery.

  • On the app, the composer now opens straight from the app instead of loading from the website, so you can start writing sooner.

Notifications

  • No more double buzzes: each notification arrives exactly once.

  • A big burst of notifications no longer gets lost on the way.

  • If you sign in on someone else's phone, or hand yours over, it now only shows notifications for whoever is signed in. Signing out stops them.

  • Notifications are marked as read when you actually see them.

Premium

  • New Manage subscription screen in the app.

  • If you've had subscriptions in more than one place (say, an old App Store one and a card one), Premium now stays on as long as any of them is active.

  • Pausing a Google Play subscription no longer ends Premium early.

  • If a payment fails, you're pointed to the right place to fix it: the App Store, Google Play, or your card settings.

  • You can no longer accidentally end up with two subscriptions at once.

Fixes

  • Profiles with handles like /writer open properly again instead of asking you to sign in.

  • New accounts no longer get a temporary handle based on their email address.

  • A broken post can no longer stop a whole feed from loading.

  • RSS feeds only ever show public posts.

Safety and security

We closed several security issues, including a sign-in link trick that could send you to another site, and gaps in what suspended accounts could do. We haven't seen any of them used against anyone.

How to get it

  • Website: it's already live.

  • App (1.2.7): the update downloads automatically. Close and reopen the app once or twice to apply it.

  • Older app versions: update from the App Store or Google Play to get everything.

Thanks for writing here 🖤
