Made a cake on a Tuesday for no occasion and got asked three times what it was for.

It was for Tuesday. It is for eating. There does not need to be a birthday attached.

I do understand the question. A whole cake is a lot of cake for one person and the social form of a cake is that it arrives at something. But I think the reason baking on a weeknight feels slightly transgressive is exactly why it works: it is four hours of the evening spent on something nobody required, which is a fairly rare way to spend an evening once you are grown.
