The loaf did not rise and I want to be honest about it rather than posting the one good slice at an angle.
I know what happened. The kitchen was cold, I did not give it the extra hour it was clearly asking for, and I baked it because I wanted to eat at eight rather than at nine. All three of those were decisions. None of them were mistakes exactly. I just wanted dinner more than I wanted bread.
It came out dense and a bit sad and perfectly edible. Made it into toast. Toast fixes a surprising amount.
The thing nobody says about baking is that most of it is a negotiation with time that you will usually lose, because time just sits there being time while you decide how hungry you are.
