When is a homeless person truly homeless? That was a question I asked myself before creating my current Cyberpunkdreams girl. A vagrant by all accounts, but a vagrant with purpose. A mission to fulfill.
Arriving in the police state of Cincinatti, sneaking through the border via a smuggler network, she set out to what all good heroes do: Tear down the ruling class. Immediately, she got to work shooting down surveillance drones, feeding cops whereabouts to the community and robbing police-affiliated businesses. Too much, too fast for a girl who's barely familiar with the hellscape she's just gotten into.
After being rounded up by the government's not-so-secret rentacop agency, she did a month long stint in the detention facility and faced all manners of abuse for her ... differences. Some that shan't be gone into detail here. After being bailed out by one sympathetic to her plight, she was evicted from her apartment for over a months worth of unpaid rent, and began peddling cheap drugs and scrapped electronics on a dingy street corner. She used the last of her cash to put in a deposit on a pick-up truck for rental, then promptly changed the plates and opted to never return the truck, instead using it to run low-rep cargo hauling jobs.
Living out of what is essentially a stolen truck, she realized that she can help dismantle the regime from within. Working with the smugglers, she sneaks contraband of all kinds in and out of the city limits. Drugs, data, even people those in power would rather not be allowed within the walls. After all, who suspects a street bum?
Street bums stick together, and by helping out the local homeless network, those cast away from society assist her in kind. Food, money, information. Access to areas normally off limits to common folk, such as the homeless encampments that dot the city. Homeless people aren't just nobodies, they often come from former positions of power themselves, and can be surprisingly handy contacts to have.
Her story is still developing, but I quite like Cyberpunkdreams a lot. The heavy emphasis on roleplaying allows your characters story to unfold in a limitless number of ways, and even seemingly bad situations or choices can lead to some unique opportunities not afforded to those who play it safe.
