Subtitles on for everything now, including things in my own language, and my viewing has improved in a way I did not anticipate.

The obvious gain is dialogue I would have missed. The unexpected one is that I stop the film less. I used to rewind ten seconds three or four times a night, and each of those is a small break in the thing.

The purist objection is that you read instead of watching. In practice I glance down for about a fifth of a second and spend the rest of it looking at the film I am no longer interrupting.
